Lesson 9.1 & 9.2: Introduction to Khmer Folktales (រឿងព្រេង)

Khmer folktales, or រឿងព្រេង (rueung preng), are a rich source of cultural values and moral lessons. They are traditionally passed down through oral storytelling and often feature clever heroes (like Judge Rabbit), foolish villains, powerful giants (យក្ស - yeak), and magic.

The Story of Vorvong and Sorvong

One of the most famous Khmer legends is the story of two princely brothers, Vorvong and Sorvong. Betrayed by their stepmother, they are sent into exile. Through their intelligence, bravery, and good character, they overcome powerful giants, evil sorcerers, and many other challenges to eventually reclaim their rightful place. The story teaches core Cambodian values about perseverance, karma (the result of one's actions), and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

Lesson 9.6 - 9.8: The Performing Arts

The Reamker (រាមកេរ្តិ៍) - The Khmer Ramayana

The Reamker is the Cambodian epic poem, based on the Hindu Ramayana. It is not just a story but a cornerstone of Cambodian culture. It tells the story of Prince Rama (ព្រះរាម), his wife Sita (នាងសីតា), and their struggle against the demon king Ravana (ក្រុងរាពណ៍). This story is the basis for much of Cambodia's classical art forms.

Apsara Dance (របាំអប្សរា) - Classical Dance

Khmer classical dance is one of the nation's most treasured art forms, famous for the graceful hand gestures and elegant costumes of the Apsara dancers. Each intricate movement of the fingers and hands has a specific meaning and tells a part of a story, often from the Reamker. It is a highly disciplined art that takes years to master.

Sbek Thom (ស្បែកធំ) - Shadow Theater

Sbek Thom is a form of shadow puppetry where large, non-articulated puppets made from a single piece of leather are backlit by a fire. A narrator tells stories from the Reamker, accompanied by a traditional Pinpeat orchestra. It is considered a sacred art form and is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Lesson 9.9: Creative Writing Activity

Write a Short Story Based on a Proverb

Choose one of the proverbs from this module and write a very short story (2-3 sentences) that illustrates its meaning.

Example using "ដំរីស្លាប់យកចង្អៀរទៅបាំង":

(A student made a mistake on his exam. He tried to hide it from his teacher. But the teacher knew about his big mistake.)

Your Turn:

Try to write a short story for the proverb: កុំឃើញដំរីជុះ ជុះតាមដំរី.

Challenge:

For an extra challenge, try writing a story for "ចេះដប់មិនស្មើប្រសប់មួយ".
